Why Is It So Expensive to Rent Luxury Yachts in Melbourne

I often met the feedback by the customers who wanted to rent luxury yachts after enquiry. Their first response was that it was too expensive to rent luxury yachts in Melbourne. In fact, after detailed learning, I felt that “you get what you pay for”, which depended on whether you really liked and needed the yacht scene.

There is a popular saying in yacht transactions. The yacht owners having yachts only have two happiest days, including one day of buying yachts, and the other day of selling yachts. This experience is especially prominent among the commercial yacht owners in Melbourne.

Objective Factors Such as Climate and Weather

It is well known that, Melbourne has two seasons as dry season and wet season in a year, and four seasons in a day, thus the climate is changing all the time. Melbourne has a too long winter. The period from April to October of each year basically belongs to winter, and the temperature of sea water is very low, so it is impossible to play with water in sea. Meanwhile, the Yarra River appreciating the urban landscape has the height limitation of several bridges, and blocks all luxury yachts outside, so the luxury yachts cannot pass through the Yarra River and reach nearby the urban center casino Crown. Moreover, the estuary is industrial wharf, so one passage of sea scenery on the way is not very beautiful. Therefore, there are only a few yacht owners daring to engage in yacht rental in Melbourne.

Maintenance Costs

Melbourne is the second largest city and gathering place of high-net-worth individuals in Australia. Numerous people have the conditions of purchasing luxury yachts. However, when considering the annual maintenance costs, most people will flinch, and finally choose renting yachts. For the private yachts, there are several indispensable costs. The value of one 60-foot private second-hand luxury yacht is about A$700,000, but the annual quay fee is A$ 12,000-18,000, the insurance premium is A$3,000-6,000, the maintenance fee is A$20,000-30,000, and the depreciation fee is A$30,000-50,000. Therefore, even if the yacht is used for not many times in a year, after calculating all expenses, you will find about A$100,000 is lost. The traveling oil fee, captain fee and waiter fee each time is not calculated yet. We once met the consultation of several Chinese friends on jointly holding yachts with Uboat, the purpose of which was to share such huge and requisite expenses. The maintenance costs of a private luxury yacht are about A$100,000, not to mention the annual maintenance costs of a commercial yacht which needs to purchase commercial insurance and hire a commercial captain.

Current Situation of Resources and Competition in Melbourne

Due to the comprehensive factors such as climate, harbour and maintenance costs, Melbourne has only a few commercial luxury yachts, unlike that the Sydney Harbour has 170 luxury yachts, Gold Coast has more than 10 luxury yachts, and Brisbane has seven or eight commercial yachts in operation. However, at present, Melbourne has and only has 2 luxury yachts, including one luxury yacht with length of 80 feet and rated load of 65 persons, which is comfortable for 40 persons to have activities; and the other luxury yacht with length of 72 feet and rated load of 35 persons under the exclusive operation and management by Uboat. When renting yachts, there are no complex charging ways like those of the Sydney Harbour. The rental prices of Melbourne luxury yachts are simple and rough. Now let’s dissect their respective price composition.

A yacht with length of 80 feet and rated load of 65 persons. Details

From Monday to Wednesday, A$2,000/hour, at least 4 hours, not allowing BYO foods and wine, set menu at least A$155/person.

From Thursday to Sunday, A$2,500/hour, at least 4 hours, not allowing BYO foods and wine, set menu at least A$155/person.

B yacht with length of 72 feet and rated load of 35 persons. Details

Off season, A$1,599/hour, at least 3 hours, allowing BYO foods and wine, BYO foods A$15/person, BYO wine A$20/person, arrangement of foods at least A$55/person.

High season, A$1,799/hour, at least 3 hours, allowing BYO foods and wine, BYO foods A$15/person, BYO wine A$20/person, arrangement of foods at least A$55/person.

Below we will compare the expenses of two yachts through the customer’s true enquiry case:

The customer plans to hold a yacht birthday party for his girlfriend in a Saturday night of August, and hopes to invite 30 friends attending together.

In consideration of the A yacht, since A yacht requires at least 4 hours and the weekend price is high, the foods and wine can select the minimum set menu A$155/person, then the A yacht expenses are: 2,500*4+155*30=14,650.

In consideration of the B yacht, the customer selects the minimum requirement for 3 hours, BYO foods and wine, then the B yacht expenses are: 1,599*3+15*30+20*30=5,847.

Just as mentioned at the beginning of the article, at first sight, it is so expensive to rent luxury yachts in Melbourne. However, it depends on how you think. Compared to the owning of a yacht, the rental fee of annual going to sea for three or five times is a drop in the bucket. Once again, “you get what you pay for”. Melbourne only has two luxury yachts. If the customer wants to hold a memorable proposal or birthday party, or has the annual plan of going to sea by yacht, renting yachts is very cost-effective. After all, there are a few people to afford the rental of luxury yachts in Melbourne, just like the luxuries are born for only a few people.
